National Arts Month: showcasing artistry, appreciating identity

COTABATO CITY (February 22, 2023) — The Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage is leading the celebration of the National Arts Month in the region as a platform to showcase artistry and appreciate Bangsamoro identity.

On Bangsamoro YoutHours’ 44th episode, on Thursday, February 16, Community Affairs Officer Sheryan Guialel highlighted the Commission’s various programs and activities to celebrate the National Arts Month which is observed annually throughout the month of February.

Through Proclamation 683 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino in 1991, National Arts Month aims to celebrate the artistic excellence and pay tribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the Filipino heritage and culture.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ani ng Sining, Bunga ng Galing” to immerse Filipinos in diverse cultural expressions and celebrate the bountiful harvest from the Filipino imagination.

“Galing” alludes to artistic excellence as well as underscoring the capacity of the arts to heal, rebuild, and restore in a post-pandemic setting,” the National Commission for Culture and the Arts said.

Among the activities conducted in the region include the digital postermaking Virtual Art.

“Art has a huge impact, it can even lessen emotional distress which is common among youth. Through art you can manage your emotions by expressing your creative energy,” said Guialel on the importance of art appreciation among youth.

Other programs of the office include School of the Living Tradition. It intends to highlight the talents of “Cultural Masters” and preserve cultural identity by educating practical skills to the younger generation.

The Bangsamoro Museum, which is found inside the Bangsamoro Government Center, is also an effort of the Commission to highlight historical artifacts of the Bangsamoro Culture.

“We are very glad to cater especially our youth. It is necessary to instill them knowledge about our history and culture as early as possible in order to appreciate their whole identity,” she said.

“Studying our roots is part of our responsibilities as a youth. It is crucial in pondering upon our cause, struggles, and gains as Bangsamoro,” she added.

BCPCH is an office mandated to write the Bangsamoro history. It is the primary institution in preserving the history, culture, arts, tradition, and rich cultural heritage of the Bangsamoro people across the region.

The NCCA is the government agency in charge of overseeing and organizing the events of National Arts Month while Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage leads the regional celebration. (BYC PR Unit/AAA)
