COTABATO CITY (August 14, 2023) — Researchers of four policy-research proposal winners will commence their studies focusing on young Bangsamoro women as the Bangsamoro Youth Commission (BYC) awarded their seed grant worth ₱200,000 each.

IIC 2023 is a call for policy-research proposals focusing on the advancement of young Bangsamoro women, with the goal of designing data-driven programs and interventions that will redound to their benefit.

The awarding was held on Saturday, August 12, in Cotabato City, during the celebration of International Youth Day (IYD) 2023.

BYC Chairperson Marjanie Mimbantas Macasalong said the initiative underscores the criticality of empowering young women by directly addressing multifarious gender-related concerns.

“By focusing on gender issues and engaging with a variety of fields, these research proposals aim to empower women and girls, address gender disparities, and promote gender equity, ultimately contributing to social justice and inclusive development in the Bangsamoro region,” Macasalong added.

Each of the four winning research teams received a ₱200,000 seed grant to finance their study. The University of Southern Mindanao – Kabacan will provide expert guidance throughout the research process.

The winning policy-research proposals are as follows:

“ETHNOMETHODOLOGICAL PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH ON PRACTICES THAT BUILD YOUNG WOMEN’S ECONOMIC AND HEALTH RESILIENCE THROUGH THE MORO WOMEN’S GENDER LENS” by Lalang Ni Sigay

“AVAILABILITY OF SPORT DEVELOPMENT DOMAINS, SPORT SUCCESS, AND SPORT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES WITH RESPECT TO ISLAMIC CULTURE OF ADOLESCENT GIRL ATHLETES IN MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR: A POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR LEVERAGING SUPPORT AMONG SECONDARY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN BARMM” by Mindanao State University (MSU) – Maguindanao

“EXAMINING THE LIVELIHOOD CONDITIONS OF SAMA BAJAU YOUNG WOMEN IN BONGAO, TAWI-TAWI” by MSU Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography

“UPCYCLING INVASIVE SPECIES OF RIO GRANDE: A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT, GENDER EQUITY, AND OTHER SOCIAL ISSUES” by TheMindaNow

These research endeavors will result in evidence-grounded insights and recommendations, encompassing identifying best practices, evaluating the effectiveness of existing interventions for young women, and generating new knowledge that can guide the development of gender-responsive policies and programs.

The research will span four months, commencing on August 15 and concluding on December 15, within the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The ceremonial awarding of the grants took place during the Chairperson’s 4th State of the Bangsamoro Youth Address (BYC) in this city, where he presented the milestones of the Commission and of the Bangsamoro youth in the past years.

Initiated in 2021, BYC’s Ideation Impact Challenge started as a call for project proposals where 20 youth organizations were granted seed funds amounting from P20,000 to P50,000 for their community projects. (BYC PR Unit/KAA)
