Youth volunteers gear up to assist BYC in youth empowerment project

COTABATO CITY (May 17, 2024)—To prepare for their role as community facilitators, the youth volunteers of the Bangsamoro Youth Commission (BYC) underwent an onboarding session held on May 15-16 in Cotabato City.

The youth volunteers will assist BYC in the implementation of the project “Youth Empowerment in the SPMS Box.” They are expected to facilitate interviews, focus group discussions, learning sessions, capacity development training, and the formation of youth organizations, among other activities.

According to Nairah Manongcarang, chief administrative officer of BYC, the involvement of youth volunteers in the process will significantly aid the effective implementation of the project.

During the two-day session, the volunteers were briefed on their expected roles and trained on various deliverables, including effective facilitation, data gathering, and monitoring and evaluation.

The project aims to empower 180 out-of-school youth from eight municipalities within the SPMS Box area by providing them with an Alternative Learning System (ALS) program and various capacity development training sessions, and by forming them into youth organizations.

The SPMS Box refers to a rectangular area comprising adjacent municipalities in Maguindanao del Sur province, known to be the stronghold of lawless elements. These municipalities are among the poorest in the province and are heavily affected by armed conflicts.

“Youth Empowerment in the SPMS Box” is a project of BYC under its Special Development Fund. (BYC PR Unit/KAA)
