Commission Proper passes reso requesting MBHTE to implement anti-bullying program

COTABATO CITY (July 23, 2023) – The Commission Proper of the Bangsamoro Youth Commission (BYC) adopted a resolution requesting the the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) to ensure compliance of academic institutions with Republic Act No. 10627 or the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 and its implementing rules and regulations.

The resolution, which was adopted during the Commission Proper’s fifth regular session on Wednesday, July 19, requests the Education ministry to ensure that schools within the region comply with the law by adopting anti-bullying policies, and implement prevention and intervention programs to address bullying.

The law specifically addresses incidents of school-related bullying, especially those involving students and extending to bullying occurrences on social media platforms. It aims to safeguard the well-being of children enrolled in kindergarten, elementary, and secondary schools, as well as learning centers.

BYC Chairperson Marjanie Mimbantas Macasalong, who authored the resolution, emphasized the significance of this measure in promoting a safe and nurturing educational environment for the youth.

“Bullying among basic education learners is a pressing issue that we cannot afford to neglect. The future of our nation lies in the hands of our youth, and it is our responsibility to protect and nurture them,” Macasalong said.

Morever, BYC Lanao del Sur with Marawi City conducted a series of anti-bullying forum in select schools in Marawi City in 2022, highlighting the importance of adopting policies in order to prevent and address any acts of bullying.

With this resolution, the Commission Proper reaffirms its commitment to advocate for policies that strengthen the welfare of the youth. By collaborating with the MBHTE, the envisioned Prevention and Intervention Program under R.A. 10627 can be effectively implemented, thereby cultivating a nurturing and inclusive environment for the Bangsamoro youth (BYC PR Unit/SAMN)
