RNC urges LGUs, policy-makers to address malnutrition and food insecurity in the region

COTABATO CITY (July 31, 2023) — The Regional Nutrition Council of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RNC-BARMM) is urging local government units and policy-makers to address malnutrition in the region.

On the occasion of its 49th-year celebration, the RNC highlights the significance of making a healthy diet affordable for all, considering the significant changes brought by the pandemic.

As the leading policy-making body responsible for nutrition in the region, Marilyn C. Valenza, RND, OIC Nutrition Program Coordinator of Regional Nutrition Council – BARMM said the council is actively formulating its Action Plan for Nutrition to advocate for good nutrition in the region.

Through implementing strategic policies and initiatives, the council aims to secure the region’s welfare by effectively addressing malnutrition.

The urgency of the issue is evident, with malnutrition and food insecurity posing pressing challenges to both individuals and the country’s development.

Valenza said recognizing the critical role of good nutrition is fundamental to a good health and overall development.

“Balanced diet is crucial particularly among the youth, who represent the future of society and families. Our body needs daily intake of variety of healthy foods, as our cells require 30 to 40 different nutrients for optimal health,” she said.

In light of recent statistics revealing the prevalence of malnutrition in the region, the council emphasizes the importance of collective action from various stakeholders.

“This problem cannot be single-handedly resolved by a certain office, rather it should be a collaborative effort among institutions. Hence, we encourage our local chief executives to actively participate in formulating policies that prioritize the welfare of the people and effectively address malnutrition at the grassroots level,” said Valenza.

Meanwhile, she also urged families to engage in food production through initiatives such as home gardens and community projects, ensuring a consistent supply of nutritious food.

Concluding her talk, Valenza stresses the importance of integrating a youth action plan into local nutrition action plans.

“We, in the RNC provides technical assistance… We encourage the Local nutrition committees and LGUs to have local nutrition action plan, wherein programs and activities for the youth are also integrated.” she said. (BYC PR Unit/AAA)
