HIKMA empowers vulnerable youth amidst community crisis

COTABATO CITY – An officer of the Hegemony for Improvement and Kadsusuled Movement Association (HIKMA) discussed their advocacies centered on youth empowerment, peacebuilding, quality education, solidarity during Bangsamoro YoutHours’ 23rd episode, Thursday, June 9.

Rosda Ibrahim, founder and general secretary of HIKMA, said despite the recurring armed-conflict faced by the young people in their community, the organization’s determination to serve their fellow youth is continuous and sustained.

HIKMA is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-government community-based youth organization founded in 2021 that operates in Barangay Butilen, Datu Salibo, Maguindanao. It is composed of youth, students, and young professionals.

Among the organization’s programs in education include Halaqah, a three-month special class program aiming to teach students on Arabic Literacy, performing Salah correctly, memorizing short Surahs and supplications. They also conduct symposium in collaboration with other youth organizations in the area.

Moreover, HIKMA also participates in various trainings and seminars to capacitate and empower their members such as the recently conducted workshop in partnership with the UNDP and LGU Datu Salibo.

Strengthening community engagements, members also implement monthly Masjid Clean-up Drive in preparation for the Muslim worshippers for the Jumuah prayer; visiting various Madrasah, orphanage centers, and other Islamic institutions to conduct feeding program and provide them with school supplies.

They also partook in cleaning up water drainages and waste segregation during the Water Consciousness Week spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR).

Ebrahim encouraged youth to join organization as it helps to them towards their personal growth making them understand further the realities happening in the community.

“I studied for years, and now working as a public school teacher, however, I could say that not all lessons are taught in the four corners of the class. Most of which that I learned and helped me to grow as a person did not come from my formal schooling, instead, I learned through youth organizations which enabled me to delve myself in the realities of our community,” she said.

“Mas marami tayong matututunan kung sasali tayo sa mga youth organizations dahil sa opportunity tulad ng mga seminars at workshops na magbibigay sa atin ng mas malawak na pang-unawa at maaring  maging ambag natin bilang isang kabataan sa ating mga komunidad,” she added.

Bangsamoro YoutHours streams every Thursday, 4 PM to 5PM at the Facebook pages of Bangsamoro Youth Commission and Bangsamoro Media Productions and airs at DXAE FM 99.7 MHz radio station in Cotabato City. (BYC PR Unit)
